Description

The Lagoon Nebula (M8) and the Trifid Nebula (M20) are a pair of famous celestial objects located in the Scutum-Centaurus Arm of the Milky Way, both approximately 4100 light years away from Earth.

The Lagoon Nebula is a vast emission nebula and a star-forming region, spanning about 110x50 light years, embedded within it are protostellar materials and a group of young, hot stars. The Trifid Nebula is a rare combination nebula, encompassing emission nebula (red part), reflection nebula (blue part), and dark nebula (dark gaps within the emission nebula).

The Trifid Nebula is also a star-forming region, containing open clusters and many young stars.

Using a small, short-focus refractor telescope, both nebulas can be captured at the same time. Part of the Scutum-Centaurus Arm where the nebulas are located is also captured in the image, presenting a dark yellow color due to the abundance of gas and dust within the arm.
